The next time you want to be entertained by Kathy Griffin, think again. Kathy is drawing heavy criticism for her recent atheistic acceptance speech at the Prime time Emmy awards. That content being what the Catholic League is calling the redheaded comic's "obscene and blasphemous" remarks upon hoisting her statuette.
"Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humor?" Griffin responded to E! News Tuesday.
"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award," the oft-self-deprecating performer said last Saturday at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, where more than 60 less mainstream Emmys were handed out in anticipation of the main event this Sunday.
"I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. " "Suck it, Jesus, this award is my god now!"
In response to the Catholic League's condemnation of Griffin's "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech," and in addition to the assumption that more protests could arise from other religious groups or similarly concerned citizens, the TV Academy has opted to cut Griffin's reverse shout-out.
"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night," a TV Academy spokesperson said in a statement to E! Online. Instead, "there will be an abbreviated version of [her] acceptance speech on the telecast." (E! Online is a division of E! Networks.)
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:
“Mel Gibson. Michael Richards. Isaiah Washington. Imus. Jerry Lewis. Every time a celebrity offends a segment of the population, he pays a price, in one way or another. The question now is whether Kathy Griffin will pay a similar price for her outburst. And as we have learned, her verbal assault was calculated.
Freedom of speech and religion does not give anyone the right to insult an other's faith.
It's time that we Catholics and Christians let others know that such actions will not be tolerated.

Finnally a member of the Church with guts to speak out over increasing abuse of Christians
Sir: Regarding your statement that "freedom of speech and religion does not give anyone the right to insult an other's faith," I heartily disagree. In fact, that very right is covered by those freedoms. No doubt your understandable zeal to defend the dignity of your Savior has blinded you to one of the most fundamental and cherished values of American society: the right to free expression. That right would be cancelled if every time we opened our mouths we had to check to see if some other person or group might find themselves offended by what we had to say. Ms. Griffin's comments were rude and, like much of today's discourse, were childish, but she had every right to make them. When we start saying that others have no right to say things that we find offensive, then we simply set ourselves up as the arbiters of what others may say. I'm sure you wouldn't want to do that, for no one has that privilege.

There is a difference between freedom to and freedom from. This country was founded on the latter. Freedom is not freedom when it attacks others unjustly. My Lord and Savior once said, "there are none more blind than those who refuse to see."
Yes, we all have a right to an opinion, but that opinion need not be exploited to the detriment of others. The same people who claim Kathy was free to express herself are the same people who attack celebrities and other notables when what they say or do is not politically correct today.
yep, she does have that right to say what she wants and if it offends people and their religion...so what !
I also have rights, and one of them is to boycott ANYTHING she is involved with... it's on like popcorn !
